Hadassah to hold Annual Donor Event on Sept. 20

The Akron chapter of Hadassah has tasty plans for its 86th Annual Donor Event on Sunday, Sept. 20. The community is invited to join Hadassah members and their spouses for a fabulous brunch at 10 am at the Shaw JCC. The meal will keep with the theme of the film “The Sturgeon Queens,” an award-winning documentary about the famous “Russ and Daughters” restaurant. There will be a special screening of the film for those who attend.

“If you grew up in New York, this film will bring back memories,” says Sue Spector, coordinator of the Donor Event. “And if you have visited New York, you’ll enjoy this slice of the Lower East Side.” The restaurant has been a staple in that neighborhood for 100 years, and interviews the film include 92-year old Anne Russ Federman and 100-year old Hattie Russ Gold, the titular “Daughters” in the store’s name.  Other well-known and famous customers who share their experiences at the famous restaurant include Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, writer Calvin Trillin, Chef Mario Battali, and Morley Safer.

Just as the narrators do in the film, we’ll enjoy a delectable brunch provided by Catering by Emily, which will include a delectable array of lox, bagels, smoked fish, deli desserts, and more.  Don’t worry if you are not a fish lover– there will be many other favorite Jewish deli options for you to enjoy.

The Donor Event is being planned by the Past Presidents of  the Akron Chapter of Hadassah. There is a minimum donation of $50 for Hadassah members.  The brunch and program is $25.  Spouses, community members, and friends of Hadassah members may attend for the cost of the brunch alone.

Lois Reaven has also announced that Hadassah has instituted a free one-year membership for all who wish to join Hadassah, if you join by Dec. 15, 2015.  Please call her for further info at 330-836-2119.
